Iceberg gigantesco está perto de se romper na Antártida
Um gigantesco iceberg, cuja expectativa é de que seja um dos maiores já registrados, com uma área quase do tamanho de Brasília, está perto de se soltar da Antártica.
Uma fissura, que se abriu lentamente na plataforma de gelo Larsen C na Península Antártica nos últimos anos, expandiu-se abruptamente no mês passado, crescendo em cerca de 18 quilômetros.
Ela agora tem mais de 80 quilômetros de comprimento, faltando apenas 20 quilômetros para o rompimento, disseram cientistas.
“A plataforma de gelo Larsen C na Antártica está perto de ceder uma área de mais de 5.000 quilômetros quadrados”, disseram em comunicado cientistas do Projeto Midas da Universidade de Swansea, no País de Gales.
O iceberg “irá fundamentalmente mudar o cenário da Península Antártica”, e pode anunciar um rompimento ainda maior da Larsen C, segundo o comunicado.
Plataformas de gelo são áreas onde o gelo flutua sobre o mar no fim das geleiras, com uma espessura de centenas de metros.
Cientistas temem que a perda dessas plataformas de gelo ao redor do continente gelado possa permitir que geleiras internas se mexam mais rápido em direção ao mar, à medida que as temperaturas aumentam por causa do aquecimento global, o que aumentaria os níveis do mar.
Diversas plataformas de gelo se romperam ao redor do norte da Antártica nos últimos anos, incluindo a Larsen B, que se desintegrou em 2012.
